What's the differenec between Miyuki Delica beads and rocaille seed beads?

I get asked this question a lot. Both types of beads are high quality and uniform in shape in size as you would expect from Miyuki. The main difference between Miyuki Delica beads and rocaille seed beads is their shape.

Delica beads have a cylinder or tube-like shape and rocailles, or commonly referred to as just seed beads, are more rounded.

They are both available in different sizes, but 11/0 is the most common size in both. However, the width, diameter, and hole size differ slightly. The diameter of the Delica beads is slightly smaller, but the hole size is slightly larger. Please see the photos below.

When to use Delica beads versus rocailles?

Now you may be wondering why would you use one versus the other. And this comes down to a few factors, including personal preference.

Since both types of beads are uniform in size and shape, they are both widely used for bead weaving and looming. This is essential so that the beads line up nicely together, especially when you're creating a pattern.

Since rocaille beads are rounded, they have a little more movement when they are strung or weaved together. On the other hand, Delica beads create a more rigid result.

Therefore, which beads you use depends on the look and feel you're going for. For example, since rocaille beads are rounded and have more movement, some bead artists like to use them for fringe earrings so that the fringe flows. However, many bead artists use Delica beads for fringe too.

Delica beads are great when you're working with peyote stitch. You can create lots of fun 3D shapes and intricate patterns. However, you can use rocailles with peyote stitch too.

Personally, I use both beads. It just depends on what I'm making. Sometimes you can even use both in the same project. For example, with beaded tassel earrings. You can use Delica beads for the peyote stitch top and rocaille seed beads for the fringe.

I encourage you to try both and see which you like working with best. And if you have any questions, I'm always happy to help! 😊
